August 2008 Lease Rate for 08 VW Jetta

My Take: The Jetta leases are looking pretty decent this month. I know I’m posting this a bit late this month, but these rates should last through the end of the month, so you have just shy of one week’s time to jump on this. Thanks to Jake for noticing my “error” here. I did not change the residual to 59% from 68% when calculating the 36mo lease. After some quick calculation, I’ve noticed that the lease deal is a bit on the “expensive” side. Granted, when compared to say, a Honda Civic EX Coupe, this is still pretty decent.

  • Jetta Wolfsburg

2008 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Manual
24 Month – Residual 68% of MSRP – .00142 Base Rate
36 Month – Residual 59% of MSRP – .00142 Base Rate
48 Month – Residual 52% of MSRP – .00181 Base Rate

24mo Payment: $309 at invoice, $363 at MSRP
36mo Payment: $278 at invoice, $315at MSRP

Wow, cheap. $224 a month + tax and just a tad over $1000 due at signing . Pretty good deal if you ask me. The Jetta is actually a bigger car than most people think. Fairly well appointed too. Typo here, the cheapest payment here is more like $278. Not TERRIBLE since its the Worlfsburg edition. Since you are leasing, you won’t have to worry too much about “reliability” because you will be covered under the warranty until lease-end.  I think the other Jettas (except the GLI) should hover around this range too (possibly less for the SE). If you are looking for a Jetta, this is certainly a good month to get into one. Not as great of a deal as I originally thought. To make up for my “mistake”, I’ll calculate the SE model’s payment range, hoping to uncover a decent deal here…

  • Jetta 2.5 SE Manual
  • MSRP $20,500
  • Invoice $19,389
  • Standard inception fees + tax not included
  • Residuals posted are for 15K miles/year.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 SE Manual
24 Month – Residual 64% of MSRP – .00081 Base Rate
36 Month – Residual 55% of MSRP – .00081 Base Rate
48 Month – Residual 48% of MSRP – .00130 Base Rate

24mo Payment: $287 at invoice, $335at MSRP
36mo Payment: $250 at invoice, $282 MSRP

Certainly cheaper here, but not exactly a “deal” I guess I could live with sub $300 payments on a Jetta.  Go with the 12k mile lease and watch your payments drop another $10 bucks or so. Bummer, I got all excited about the cheaper Jetta leases…too bad I goofed. Go with the GTI, you’ll probably have more fun with that car.

  1. Hey G,
Just wondering…I was at the leasespecials website and the numbers they have posted are way higher than yours. Im really unsure as to how they are calculating them…so im guessing yours are right. Also, can you run the numbers for the GTI if you get a chance…thanks.

Ps. Went to a couple of Volvo dealers this week to get an up close look at a C30. I was told Residual 44% and MF of .00185 OR Residual of 46% and MF of .00208. Which really hurts because this car should really be able to be had for low threes. Bummer. Im afraid leasing seems to be dying a slow painful death.

  2. L: I always think that the best deal you can get are the ones that you negotiate yourself. So I never pay much attention to advertisement numbers. Couple of things to note about my numbers is that they are a range. Getting invoice or less will require some negotiating. The key is to never pay MSRP, so you know what number to stay away from. Also, I don’t include taxes on my estimates and I assume you will pay 1st month payment and all fees associated with the lease up front. So be sure to at least tack on tax on your monthly payments. Many times, people want NO MONEY DOWN and it ends up being a higher monthly because they roll all those inception fees in.
Here are the GTI numbers http://www.ridewithg.com/index.php/2008/08/august-2008-lease-rate-for-08-vw-gtirabbit/ I worked them out some weeks ago. They look pretty good, but I’d almost rather have a MINI Cooper S.

Lastly, I totally agree with you on the C30. Doesn’t look good. I think partly is because Volvo is a Ford and Ford is making leasing painful right now. However, if you stick with German/Japanese, leasing is still fairly attractive.

  3. First of all, I’d like to say thank you for the invaluable content you are providing to the leasing community. I have been watching all your posts vigilantly over the last 2 months and am ready to sign a couple fo lease deals. I do need to ask however how yo came up with the $224 payment above. Plugging in the MSRP and Invoice prices listed into your formula and came up with 278. Am I missing something? Thanks again.

  4. Jake: ROFL. My bad. I forgot to change the residual to 59% instead of 68%. Big difference. Thanks for noticing that. I guess I better triple check my numbers next time. Many thanks for pointing it out Jake. I’ll be changing my recommendation and results.

  5. yes, like jake said–you have a very good site going here. for me, part of getting a car is more about playing the game and i end up enjoying all the research. your site has been very helpful. i do like the cooperS. its a tough decision!! base gti give you a few more options i think. btw, B’s yellow mini on the wall is SWEET.

  6. Thanks L! I just wish I had started this last year instead of this year. Haahaa.

I think either the CooperS or GTI will be a good choice. As long as warranty is covered, just get something that’s fun and fits the budget!

B’s Short Bus is pretty cool for sure. One of the few cars I actually like in yellow. The other is a Lamborghini.^_^

  7. more like *drool* lambo. Haha. That’s one of those cars that you won’t want to get rid of even if gas prices where $10 a gallon…it warms my heart just looking it at on the driveway.
