October 2008 Lease Rates for All 09 BMW Models

My Take: Here are the lease rates for the 2009 BMW models. The 2008 models should be the same as last month, here’s a quick link to that post. I’ve picked out a selection of cars that I feel has a good balance of high residual value and lower money factor, compared to the rest of the BMW lineup. You can check out THE LIST later to compare these numbers with other models. As usual, the 1-series’ money factor is getting no love from the folks at BMW. While the 3-series seems to have well-rounded numbers. The upside to the 1-series is that it has a much higher residual value, which seems to help counter the high money factor.

  1. What are the residuals based off of as far as mileage is concerned? 15k / 12k / 10k?

Curious what the residuals are for the other mileages since I have a friend who is either going to get the ’08 or ’09 328i before the end of the month simply depending on which is less money.

I personally just picked up a new ’09 A4… And couldn’t be happier.

  2. all rates are based on 15k mile leases.
    add 2% for 12k and 3% for 10k.

Congrats on the new A4! It’s a fine car. The 09 will end up being cheaper, check out the list to see how it compares.

  3. On a 09 328i vs a 08 328i, what number as far as the price should I be shooting for. Do you think for the 09 hitting the invoice or below is possible?

  4. Mark: I don’t think hitting invoice on the 09s is realistic, 08models maybe. The closest I’ve heard on the 09s so far is about $500 over invoice. BMW dealers are very difficult deal with in most cases. The good news (for us anyway) is that last month was a rough month for BMW in terms of sales, so you are certainly in a good position to negotiate.

  5. How lung before they stop producing 2008 models? for example are we stuck choosing out of the ’08 models on the lots?

  6. once the 09s roll into showrooms, 08 are effectively out of production so you will have to pick from the lot.

  7. As you can see I’m not really good with this stuff so this may sound like a stupid question. For a 10K mile lease in October for 36 months on the 3.0 X5, what is the actual rate? Is it lower or higher in November?

  8. Shirley: a 10K mile lease would result in an increase in residual by about 3% from the residual values posted for each money. I don’t have lease rates for November yet, but I suspect they will be slightly lower lower than Oct.

  9. Wow, I’m surprise you understood what I wrote. Major typos on my previous post! LOL. Anyway, I hear the rates should be out sometime next week. Hopefully you aren’t in too much of a hurry, they should come out soon.

  10. G: I appreciate all that you do for everyone. I have a question. I am acquiring a ’09 328xi coupe (European Delivery). MSRP (w/ options) is $41,320. I got it down to $800 over invoice for $36,405. These numbers are fixed. If I decide to do a lease with 10K miles, 36 months, is it normal to go to BMW and say: “here is the “published” residual value and money factor for my car, this will be my deposit and these will be my monthly payments…. thank you… have a nice day.” … or is there a way that BMW will try to tinker with the numbers to make me pay more. Looking forward to the November rates. Thanks again.

  11. K: Thanks for stopping by! To answer your question, BMW tinker with the numbers and make you pay more. That is the BMW way. What you need to understand is that rates posted reflect the base rate. BMW will more than likely have a slightly inflated rate which can be “lowered” by placing one or a few security deposits. The residual will more than likely stay true the figure posted on my site (and others). What I would watch out for is the padded money factors, bank fees and such. Those add up very quickly.

  12. Just stopped by a BMW dealership and for the 2009 328xi coupe, the money factor for November is 0.00215 and the residual was 59% on 15K per year with the standard +2% for 12K/year and +3% for 10K/yr. The APR for finance is 1.9%. My question for you is that the standard estimation of APR is MF x 2400. In this case, the MF x 2400 is 5.16% but the APR that they are giving me is 1.9%. Is this degree of difference lean one towards purchasing? Like I mentioned before, the MSRP on my car is $41320, the sale price is $36405, tax is 6%. Thanks.

  13. The 1.9% refers to financing a purchase only. At times like this, I generally advice lessees to consider buying their cars because financing costs so little, it makes sense specially on those 0% or 0.9% financing rates. It is only advantageous to lease when the money factor is lower than the APR for financing and the residual value is strong. In your case, it may be a good idea to buy because of the special APR being offered. You can still drive it for 36 months and then resell the car and get back some of that equity. Just make sure you don’t put too many miles on it.
By the way, thanks for the info on the new 3series rates. Looks like they’ve gone up a bit on the mf, but the residual remains the same. shouldn’t be too big of a payment increase. hopefully i can get my hands on the rates of the entire bmw line up by the start of next week.
