My Take: Three years ago, it used to hurt every time you had to gas up a Touareg …with today’s gas prices, I think it pretty much kills family budgets, ruins vacation plans and makes grown men cry. So what is the consolidation price? Ultra-low MF for those looking to lease one of this gas-thirsty urban family haulers. Doesn’t seem to help all that much since the residual values are terrible.

My Take: The MF for the GTI is looking pretty good right now, even for the 48mo lease. The residuals aren’t very good since the 2009 models have arrived. Expect payments around $350+tax with no money down for a well equipped model on a 36mo/12k lease and $330+tax on a 48mo/12k lease.

My Take: This is by far the ugliest name for a car EVER! What is this? Crossover between a Tiger and an Iguana? Or maybe this car was assembled in Tijuana, Mexico? Perhaps it just sounds much better in German…I haven’t driven this car yet, so I can’t say much beyond the ugliness of the name. Rates are high as expected for a new 09 model so lets not all start rushing to VW dealerships just yet.

May 2008 Lease Rate for 08 VW Jetta

Jetta GLI
36mo/15k miles per year – residual 52% – money factor .00050

Jetta S
36mo/15k miles per year – residual 57% – money factor .00111

cash incentive: $1000

My Take: The New(er) Jetta has grown up compared to the last generation. Much like the new Accord, the Jetta has put on some weight and expanded both in length and width. (Sounds like me as I get older). The money factor is very good right now, the $1000 cash incentive is icing on the cake. The residual on the GLI could be better, but your money factor is next to nothing.  If you can negotiate a good selling price, this is not a bad ride to get. VW is pretty much pitching the $1000 as “sign and drive”, so they just use the cash incentive to cover your drive-off. Not bad if you want to get into a ride with no money to start.

Test Drive: 2008 Volkswagen R32

I have liked the new GTI ever since it was introduced. I even tried to lease it last year instead of the TSX my wife currently drives. When I heard that the R32 would be coming for the 08 model year, I was looking forward to it. In terms of looks, it’s pretty much like a hatchback Jetta. Pretty decent assortment of standard features such as AWD, 18″ alloys, ipod jack, leather seating, etc… (The seats are not powered though.) The chrome finish on the grill/bumper is certainly more attractive than the honeycomb grill found on the GTI. You don’t get a lot of color choices though; red, blue, white, gray, orange(?) are the only colors available (can’t believe it has no black! This car would look so pimp in black because it make the chrome grill jump out!). The GPS unit costs another $2000, bumping the MSRP to around $35300s. Yes folks, a tiny 6cyl hatchback for 35k, what is VW thinking?!?!?

How does it drive? It is actually not bad. It does feel rather hefty for a small car, but the V6 engine does roar like the Batmobile. DSG is impressive to say the least. I theorize that within the next decade day, manuals will be phased out in most cars as the technology becomes more widely accepted. F1 racecars have been using this technology for quite some time now. It’s about time it started trickling down to “everyday cars”.

I had a lot of fun burning rubber gunning it out of right turns and revving the engine (the exhaust note is very sweet). This car does have good amount of power for its size, coupled with AWD, the R32 should zip around extreme weather conditions without any issues. My biggest complaints? About $5000 to $7000 too much and no black.
