2011 BMW Lease Rates – July 2010

logo_bmwMy Take: The July BMW numbers are out and it looks better than June. There’s been drops in money factor for most models and trims while the residual numbers have carried over from last month. Not a bad time to get into a BMW right now. Just make sure you find the right balance between the sale price, residual and money factor in order to net the monthly payment you can afford. Here’s a sample number crunch for a 2011 BMW 128i with the value package on a 36mo/12k mile lease term. The MSRP is $32850 and the assumed sale price is $31000. Before taxes, you would be looking at approximately $379 per month, with the usual inception fees due at singing (around $1500 bucks). This is about the same amount of money I pay for my 2008 G37. If you need help number crunching, drop a comment with the MSRP, sale price and your local sales tax and I will help you with some estimates.

  1. Hey G,

First off, I’m a big fan of your website. Thanks for all the useful info and commmentary.

I’ve been in the market for a new car for months now but I havn’t been able to settle on a specific car just yet. To be honest, my works offering a 3k bonus for buying a fuel efficient car and it’s hard for me to pass it up but I want somehting power and style. After learning about the new 135i n55 engine, I’m really thinking about leasing one. What monthly payments should I aim for with the following parameters:

    Sales tax: 8.75%
    MSRP: 41-43k
    36month 15K mile lease.
0 down only 1st month payment and normal fees

    Thanks,

    sean

    • hey sean! here’s a quick estimate for you on a 2011 135i with Sport and Premium packages…
      MSRP $43000
      Sale Price $40600
      Res 61%
      MF .00170
Monthly with Tax: Approximately $2000 due at signing, $570 per month there after. If you factor your company’s $3k bonus, you could apply $2k towards the drive-off, making it a $0 drive off deal and the extra $1000 left over can reduce the payments by about $30, bringing down the monthly to $540 per month.

Alternatively, you could opt for the 335d and take advantage of the $4500 eco credit that’s still available. Here’s a quick number crunch for you…
      MSRP $49725
Sale $42100 (includes the eco credit)
      Res 55%
      MF .0019
Monthly with Tax: Also about $2000 at signing and $590 per month there after. Factor your $3000 incentive from your employer and you’d be looking at a 0$ drive-off and $560 a month.

Final thoughts…I would personally go with the 335d. Bigger car, better fuel efficiency and it’s probably still a hoot to drive (I’ve never driven the 335d, but I have driven the 335i and it’s pretty sweet so I’m guessing might be even better). For $20 a month, I think it’s a small price to pay and you get slightly better fuel economy. The 135i isn’t bad, but I question it’s practicality as a daily driver due to it’s size.

  2. Hey G-

What would I be looking at for a 2011 335i sedan sport/premium/metallic paint with the following numbers:
    – MSRP: $46,825
    – Sale price: $44,090
    – 36 months
    – 12k miles/year
    – LA sales tax (9.75%)

Seems like this is a great time to pull the trigger… if I can keep it under $600, I may be able to convince my wife! Thanks!

    • @AC. With the current sale price you mentioned and paying your fees upfront (around $1500-$2000), you would be looking at $622 with tax. You would probably need to push for a lower sale price, which I think you could. The current lease offer for a 2011 335i sedan BMWFS is promoting includes $1,305 customer cash, so there might be some more wiggle room. TrueCar.com states that their “lowest certified” sale price is around $41,900 in the Southern California area. It doesn’t say who it is (unless you register and stuff like that). Whether that’s true, remains to be seen, but at the very least, that gives you a number to shoot for. Should you be successful, you would be looking at a monthly payment of $550 after taxes (with your inception fees upfront), which I think the wife would go for.

  3. HI there – great site as always. You’re a great resource of information.

I’m looking at a 2011 X5 with Sport Activity. With options:

    $64,500 MSRP
    $62,500 Sales Price
    Only need 10K miles
Looking at either 24 or 36 mos – any recommendations?
No Sales Tax where I’m at (sorry everyone)

    Thanks very much!!

    • @richard. I don’t recommend 24 month leases because they usually end up being too costly to be worth the time.
a 36mo/10k miles per year lease is about $807, with approx $2000-$2500 due at signing. If you go with a 24 month lease, it would be around $949.

  4. G-

Thank you so much for the insight, especially the TrueCar price. Question: if I just went through TrueCar to make the purchase, could I negotiate a lease with whatever dealer it is that has the low price? As for the $1305 customer cash… great to know, I didn’t see that on Edmunds or anywhere else.

    • @ac. Hypothetically, yes. The customer cash should already be included in that truecar price. i have not used truecar.com before, so I don’t know if they will honor the price quoted on that system or if there are any strings attached. However, a sale price is needed to calculate your monthly payments. So unless some of the rebates/discounts aren’t applicable for leases (which I doubt), you shouldn’t have any problems getting the dealer to give you a good lease payment based on that low sale price. One word of caution though, BMW dealer have a tendency of quoting a higher MF because BMWFS usually requires a security deposit in order to get you the base rate (which are the ones I post on the site). If your credit is good and you put a deposit, you should be able to get the base rate.

  5. Awesome, thanks again G. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

How much would the security deposit be? Also a more general question — I can do multiple security deposits to bring down the cap cost, but these would be refunded even if the car is totaled, stolen etc?

THANKS. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    • I believe the typical security deposit is $350 for BMWFS. Now Multiple Security Deposits (MSDs) doesn’t bring down the cap cost, it brings down the Money Factor (interest rate). The only way to bring down the cap cost is to have the dealer discount you. The cap cost is your sale price + any cost that is rolled into the lease loan.

  7. I have used this site (and boasted about great deals before. I am looking to move out of my 2009 BMW 328i lease with 22 months and ~24,000 miles left. Price is firm at my cost of $593/month. Please post on this site if you want me to contact you.

  8. When BMW dealer was calculating one-pay on 2011 335d he insisted on imputing only $2000.00 as downpayment saying it made no difference.
would imputing say $20000 make any difference to final payment
    mm

    • I don’t believe it will since you will be paying the entire loan amount upfront and you aren’t technically “borrowing” any money.

  9. Hi,
I wanted to know your estimates for a 2011 750Li msrp of $96,000, sale price of $93,000 in new jersey. Im planning to put $15,000 down, as I will be buying this later on.

I also wanted to know the payments on a 2011 bmw m3 coupe msrp of $73,000, sale price $69,000 in NJ with $15,000 down.

    Thanks!

(what are your recommendations on a 740Li sale price of $79,000 vs the 750. is the engine worth the premium?)

    • Akhil, before I get into the calculations, I’d like to ask how you are planning to buy-out the car at the end. Are you planning to finance it? or will it be a lump sum? It makes a difference because if you are planning to lease the car and then finance the purchase of it later, you are better off just buying the car right now. The current money factor for the 750 is around 5% APR, the current rate for a loan is 1.9% for 60 months. If you were planning to pay-off the residual at lease end in a lump sum, then I could see leasing being more “economical” in the long run because you are financing 45% of a cars value at 5% instead of 100% of the car’s value at 2% over nearly twice as long of a period. Same thing applies to the M3.

  10. Thanks for the timely response,

I am planning to pay a lump sum payment at the end. The reason I am doing this is because I would like to be a little more liquid monthly, for the next year or so, as I am starting another business. The lump sum payment after 36 months will not be a problem, however I just wanted to know if the monthly payments can be reasonable. Will the money I am putting down really help me lower the monthly payments, versus no money down? I just needed information on 15k vs. 20k down. At the end of the day I want to have a car that has options I favor, and something I am comfortable with in 3 years since I plan to buy it.

    Thanks a bunch!

    • sounds like a good plan Akhil! Alright based on the numbers you’re giving me and using last month’s numbers, here’s what you should expect to pay (tax not included).

      750Li
      36-month | 15k miles | residual 55% | .00210 base money factor
      MSRP 96,000
      Sale 93,000
      Inception Fees $2500 (estimated)
      Cap Reduction $15,000
      Cap Cost $80,500
      Monthly $1,049

      M3
      36-month | 15k miles | residual 57% | .00180 base money factor
      MSRP $73,000
      Sale $69,000
      Inception Fees $2000 (estimated)
      Cap Reduction $15,000
      Cap Cost $56,000
      Monthly $575

Clearly, the M3 is the better lease due to a better residual and lower money factor. As for the 750 being worth the upgrade compared to the 740, it think that is a matter of preference. I recommend test driving both to see which one you’d rather have for the long term (since your are going to buy it). Ideally, if I was in your shoe and planned to keep the car, I’d get the best car I could afford; that way I won’t have any regrets down the line after I already bought out the car.

  11. Looking at leasing a 2011 335d. Msrp is 54,050 selling price of car with eco credit is $45,771. 36 month lease with 12,000 miles in the bay area with a tax rate of 9.25%. Can I do better on the price? The dealer has 7 335d in stock. The money factor is .00235 which I feel is high. Looking at a total drive off of $1,500. Should I do multiple security deposits to lower the payment?

    Thanks

    • Erick,

TrueCar indicates that in my area (Southern Cal) the best price on the 335d at that MSRP is 46450, so your price is very good.
Your MF much higher than what I posted, so it looks like your dealer is padding it to make a profit. I would recommend talking them down to the base rate, assuming your credit score qualifies. BMWFS usually requires a security deposit, so $1500 drive-off might a be tough to do without rolling any fees in. Try talking them down to the base rate, that should save you about $1000 over 3 years worth in financing.
