09 Lexus ES350 Lease Rates for January 2009

MY TAKE: It was a tough call to put this on a DO NOT LEASE post, but the fact is, the residual is just too low. The Infiniti M35 suffers from the same problem. Even if you lower the money factor, it still doesn’t seem to keep the car cheap enough for leasing. You could drop your mileage allowance down to 10k per year to help boost the residual, but still, I just don’t think it helps unless there’s a sizeable chunk of rebates to help offset the depreciation. Feel free to take a pass on this car.

08/09 Lexus IS Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: The IS is a very borderline “DO NOT LEASE” candidate right now. The residual values have tanked in the past 6 months, even on the 2009 models. It looks like LFS has tried to keep their residual values more realistic. This doesn’t bode well for us because cheap leases rely heavily on “inflated” residual values (more so than low money factors) to keep the payments low. I’m hoping Lexus keeps these residuals until February and drop the money factor significantly. That should save you a few grand in the long run. That 328i is looking mighty good right about now.

09 Lexus GS Lease Rates for December 2008

My Take: The GS’s money factor isn’t too horrible this month, although I would have liked a higher residual value for a 2009 model. Nevertheless, if you can negotiate a lower sale price, you might be able to save yourself a good chunk of change. Just remember that for every $1000 you knock off the sale price, you save about $30 per month on a 36-month lease.

09 Lexus RX350 Lease Rates for December 2008

My Take: RX350 is looks pretty good for a 08 model. The residual is still much higher than expected and the residual has dropped a bit (sitting at around 2% APR). Fairly competitive with financing deals going on right now. Leasing an SUV is not a bad idea if you consider the fact that the residual values are fixed for the duration of your lease. If gas prices go up, you don’t have to worry about your SUV losing its value because it you can just return it at the end of the lease! Isn’t that great? If gas prices stay low, then driving a SUV won’t hurt as much. Looks like a win-win situation to me. Another thing to note…even though the RX seems to be cheaper to lease than the RDX, the RDX has cash rebates (which will lower the price significantly) and it comes pretty well equipped as a base model. That’s not the case with the RX350. Of course, the RDX is a 4-cyl Turbo, while the RX350 is a V6. If you don’t like the raspy-ness of a 4cyl Turbo, then the RX is probably what you want.

2009 Top Safety Pick Awards by IIHS

From IIHS

How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute’s frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on two instrumented SID-IIs dummies, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle’s structural performance during the impact.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a two-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry — the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man. Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can’t be positioned to protect many people.

Shamefully, my G37 didn’t make the cut, but it made it into the “ALSO RANS” list:

ALSO-RANS
These 26 vehicles earn good ratings in front and side crash tests. They have ESC, standard or optional. They would be 2009 Top Safety Pick winners if their seat/head restraints also earn good ratings:

Chevrolet Malibu
Chrysler Sebring, Sebring convertible, Town & Country
Dodge Avenger, Grand Caravan
Infiniti G35, M35
Kia Amanti
Lexus ES, GS,IS
Mazda CX-7, CX-9
Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, Endeavor
Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Quest, Xterra
Saturn AURA
Smart Fortwo
Toyota 4Runner, Camry, Prius, Sienna

Something sad to note here, no Chrysler cars made it to the top of the list. I’m starting to feel like Chrysler is one automaker that probably doesn’t need the bailout since they build such “average” cars.

November 2008 Lease Rates for 08/09 Lexus ES and IS models

My Take: The rates for the 09 Lexus ES and IS look promising this month. I get the feeling that the days of leasing a $30k+ luxury car for $300s a month with just inception fees and taxes are over. After looking at Infiniti’s 09 G37s, I’m starting to think that the banks have decided not to inflate residual values too much. Good for them, bad for us. In any case, Lexus residual values could use a boost, but the money factors are pretty good. There is a $1000 cash rebate for current/former ES owners, so be sure to take advantage of that if you have/had an ES. FYI…invoice data isn’t available on the 09 IS and ES on Edmunds so you’ll have to guess as to what it is. I suspect it should be around $2000 or so under MSRP.

October 2008 Lease Rate for 09 Lexus RX350 and Toyota Camry

My Take: Sorry folks, I haven’t had the time to make up payment estimates (life of getting in the way), so I will be posting the rest of the lease rates I have. I can say that the rates look pretty good here for the RX350 and the Camry. Residuals are fairly high and money factors are pretty low. This makes for a nice leasing combination. Stay tuned for more lease rates I’ve found. Will be posting them shortly.

October 2008 Lease Rates for 08/09 FX50, IS350, Odyssey, Impreza WRX and ML350

My Take: One word sums this bunch…UNINSPIRING. Residuals are mediocre to pathetic, while the money factor is WAY too high. I’m just bundling these lease rates together since it’s pointless to analyze the numbers. After looking at lease rates monthly for six months (yes folks! RIDE with G is six months old!!! WOOT!) I can pretty much tell whats worth the time and what’s not. It’s a shame too since I really like the FX50 and the IS350.
